It is hard to describe the feeling we had when that first Humpback whale silently breached the icy waves and surfaced beside our boat.

Let me back up a bit, when we arrived in Iceland, this October, we reached out to the whale experts at Gentle Giants in the little northern town of Húsavík. Gentle Giants helped us select a package that included a guided whale watching tour, refreshments and even overalls and rain gear to keep us warm. We set off in the beautiful Skjálfandi Bay and our guides immediately knew where to go to find the whales. Within a few minutes of arriving at the spot, the giants made an appearance! Their giant bodies glided through the water beside us and as they breached the fine mist from their blow filled the air. The beautiful mountains of Vik had a fresh dusting of snow in the distance, and the entire day felt like a scene from a fairy tale. It was an adventure of a lifetime! If you have the chance to visit Iceland one day, we highly recommend following the blue signs into Husavik and booking a whale watching tour of your own!

Left: One of the whales that breached right beside us! It was hard to contain our excitement each time they appeared. Notice the beautiful white fins under the water.
